How much is too much?… All about portion control

One of the hard things about making your own dog food is figuring out how much to give them. Whenever you bought commercial dog food all you had to do was look at the back and read the food chart without even thinking. But now that I have ditched the bag I have therefore ditched the food chart and am left thinking what the heck do I do?! But not to worry because there is plenty of information out there telling you the correct amount to feed your dog based on their size and activity level. It is really important to feed your dog the proper amount of food or else you are risking your dog being over weight or under weight and becoming malnourished… and nobody wants that! Here is the food chart I use…

weight in pounds Amount per serving of meat Veggies per serving Carbs per serving Organ meats per serving
3-5 2-3 tbs 1/4- 1/2 tsp 1-2 tsp 1/4-1/2 tsp
5-10 1/4 cup-1/3 cup 1/4-1/2 tsp 2 tsp-1 tbs 1/4-1/3 tsp
10-20 1/2-3/4 cup 1/2-1 tsp 1-2 tbs 1/2-1 tsp
20-30 1/2-3/4 cup 1-1/2 tsp 2-3 tbs 1/2-1 tsp
30-40 3/4-1 cup 2-3 tsp 3 tbs-1/4 cups 1- 1 1/2 tsp
40-50 3/4-1 cup 1-2 tbs 1/4 cup-1/3 cup 2 tsp-1 tbs
50-60 1-1 1/2 cups 1-2 tbs 1/3 cup-1/2 cup 2 tsp-1 tbs
60-70 1-1 1/2 cups 2-3 tbs 1/3 cup-1/2 cup 1 1/2 tbs-2 tbs
70-80 1 1/2- 2 cups 3 tbs-1/4 cup 1/2 cup-3/4 cup 1 1/2 tbs-2 tbs
80-100 1 1/2- 2 cups 1/4 cup-1/3 cup 1/2 cup-3/4 cup 2- 2 1/2 tbs

Remember to pay close attention to your dogs health and weight and adjust accordingly to your dogs specific needs in order to keep a happy and healthy pup!
